Shovel Knight: Not Just For The Nostalgic - Siliconera Review

Siliconera:
"What makes writing a playtest for Shovel Knight tricky is that its a game unabashedly designed to inspire nostalgia. Theres some Mega Man in here, some Castlevania, some Super Mario Bros. But Im not nostalgic about those games so I cant really report on how well the game achieves its mission. I can recognize certain specific borrowed features, but whether those elements combine to pay tribute to or desecrate those original experiences is beyond me."

GeekParty writes: "Retro titles such as the original La Mulana and Shovel Knight tend to feature epic bosses on boring black backgrounds. This choice is a throwback to older titles such as Mega Man and DuckTales, but why did bosses have black backgrounds in the first place?"

Guess what it looks like?
Mighty No. 9 is being helmed by Keiji Inafune, the creator of the Mega Man series, following a successful Kickstarter campaign.
The footage shows off stages No.2 and No.5, as well as a brief glimpse at a boss battle. It seems that players are able to dash into enemies once defeated to maintain a combo and earn a higher level score.
Mighty No. 9 is set for launch in April 2015 on PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Wii U, Vita, 3DS and PC.

GeekParty writes: "The writing staff at Geek Party loves their soundtracks, but Shovel Knight delivers some killer jams with a pedigree.
Kickstarter success Shovel Knight has a very special sound team: Jake Virt Kaufman and Manami I wrote the Mega Man soundtracks Matsumae. The result is better listened to than described."

"The gaming industry is attached to an invisible pendulum. In recent years, that pendulum has noticeably swung towards an appreciation of the old school, with pixel art, grueling difficulty, and seemingly ancient ideas made new again. Yacht Club's Shovel Knight is one such product of the pendulum swing, though it doesn't fall into the trap all too common with likeminded games. It isn't just some throwaway cash-in or half-baked concept designed to take advantage of the zeitgeist. It doesn't just look the part. It expertly plays the part, making it perhaps the best retro-inspired game since Mega Man 9 and 10." - IGN

| GamerTell E3 2014 Preview: I Sucked at Super Smash Bros.

From the preview, "[Jenni Lada] went from being a 31 year old woman who thought she was at least good enough to hold her own in a match, to one who repeatedly came in last. It was sobering.
Id like to chalk most of it up to my choosing to play as new Super Smash Bros competitors, rather than returning favorites. I wanted to get the feel of characters like Mega Man and Rosalina, rather than go with people I knew. Which, as I soon learned, was probably the worst idea ever."
